academy awards of design

It’s the month of the Oscars and what better time to chat about how every room has a star attraction! The award shows focus on main characters, ensemble cast, and supporting roles. Have you ever thought of décor in that way, too? Whether you’re re-designing your home for yourself, or getting ready to style your house to sell it, it’s essential to know there’s usually only one diva in the room, and what that should be.

Star of the room

Living Room:

The sofa and/or fireplace are stars or co-stars of the room. Like a stage, when buyers’ walk into this room, they should notice the sofa and/or fireplace first. Like an actress with an attention-getting wardrobe, the sofa and fireplace should demand attention and show off the room at its finest.  The accessories used on them and their placement in the room will highlight the best features in the living room.

Dining Room:

The table is the star of this room. A luxurious centerpiece atop a neutral runner helps draw attention to this piece of furniture. Like a movie star, the dining table, along with appropriate lighting, can bring a sense of elegance to the room.

Kitchen:

Table and/or countertops. If there’s a table in the kitchen, a beautiful centerpiece helps showcase that piece. Cleared countertops—with a few purposeful supporting role pieces like cutting boards, plants, and a coffee display—help show buyers how the area will be used.

Bedroom:

Beds are the focal point of a bedroom because, well…the purpose of the room is to sleep. This star is a diva and wants all the attention on her. Include white comforters, pastel throws, and rest-inducing colors for pillows like blue, green, coral, or cream.

Bathroom:

Are you lucky enough to have a nice tub with a bench or ledge? The star of the bathroom, when there’s a tub, is the tub. Accentuate it with plants, orchids, fancy soaps and rolled towels. The sink holds a supporting role in this room, and rolled white towels, fancy soaps and plants are great “jewelry” for an awarding appearance.

Not everyone—or everything—can be the star of the show. The main character in the room should hold the attention and the other pieces provide background.
